Until recent years Amazon was experiencing large losses, due to its huge initial set up costs. The recent dip is due to promotions that have offered reduced delivery costs to consumers. The company is now increasingly cashing in on its credentials as an online retail pioneer by selling its expertise to major store groups. For example, British retailer Marks and Spencer announced a joint venture with Amazon to sell its products and service online.
A relationship between a boy and a girl from neighbouring schools causes all manner of problems. Stephen Anderson had been told that the Headmaster wanted to see him in his study immediately. After what had happened the previous day he had wanted to avoid one master in particular but it was not to be.
Stephen acknowledged to himself that in the cool light of a new day he did feel ashamed and genuinely remorseful. It also brought the Latin lesson to an end as he was the only pupil.
Stephen was the only Upper Sixth former taking Latin at A-level. Even in this year,Latin had lost most of its popularity as a subject for advanced study, and it was only the strongly held view of the Headmaster who thought Latin the most civilised of subjects, that permitted a course with a single pupil to be sanctioned.
The Headmaster was determined that his old fashioned, well disciplined grammar school for boys should maintain the values that had stood it in such good stead through the years.
The school certainly had the highest possible reputation in the northern English town where it was located. The head, Mr Howells, could be a stern man, but it went with a slight otherworldliness which made him willing to see the best in his boys, until he had no alternative but to see the worst.
Stephen thought to himself that by his actions yesterday he had left the Head with no alternative but to see him in the worst possible light. The presence of the Deputy Head, Mr Butler, was not good news.
The Head delegated almost all disciplinary matters to his deputy, a burly Welshman in his fifties. Normally discipline was maintained by masters taking boys to see Mr Butler, if they believed a caning was necessary. Canings were fairly frequent at the school — perhaps once every couple of weeks on average — but usually the recipients were fourth or fifth year boys.
Sixth year boys could be caned, but it was unusual. They were expected to behave better, and in fairness they usually did.
The fact that the Head and Deputy Head were in all probability discussing him now caused a frisson of fear to run through Stephen. Self-reproaching questions ran through his mind.
How had things gone so badly wrong? How did he ever imagine he would get away with it? And above all why had he listened to that minx Miriam?
This historical monument was within forty miles of the school and was relevant to boys studying History and also boys studying Latin. Around forty fifth form boys were going along and Mr Hodgson thought that he needed some help keeping an eye on everybody.
Stephen was very much one of his favourites as the sole Upper Sixth Latin scholar, and he suggested that Stephen come along both for educational reasons and, as a school prefect, to help supervise the trip.
Stephen felt flattered and was quick to agree. The outing was scheduled for a date in the second half of October.
The boys would be leaving by coach at 9. The school had a very high academic reputation because it was selective and charged very high fees, which allowed class sizes to be kept low.
The parents and governors expected, indeed demanded, the highest standards, not least with regard to discipline. The girls spent nearly all of their time in school with a highly organised schedule of activities. The Headmistress was Miss Spencer, now in her late forties and renowned for her own academic prowess and strict standards.
Miss Spencer always dressed smartly with a penchant for tweed in the winter months and classic cotton suits in summer. She was careful to keep her girls under strict control as much as possible, but she realised that experience of the outside world was essential to their balanced development.
So sixth form girls were allowed into the nearby town on some Saturdays, dressed smartly, but with no need to wear the school uniform.
On such occasions the girls went to great lengths to avoid the school colours of grey and maroon. In this full SWOT analysis we discuss Marks and Spencers market research, brand value, publicity as well as other strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to Amazons business.
